Nel settembre 2024, il team di conformita di un gruppo ospedaliero universitario di Basilea ha ricevuto una controversa richiesta di indennizzo per infortunio sul lavoro. Il riassunto di dimissione in archivio mostrava una data di creazione corrispondente al periodo di incapacita lavorativa dichiarato dal dipendente. I metadati del PDF raccontavano una storia diversa: il file era stato modificato tre giorni dopo la data di dimissione indicata. Il responsabile degli archivi non disponeva di alcuna versione sigillata, nessun timestamp qualificato e nessun modo per dimostrare quale data fosse corretta. L'unita antifrode dell'assicuratore ha aperto un'indagine formale. Questo tipo di controversie in Svizzera raggiunge regolarmente CHF 150'000 o piu in spese legali e arbitrali.

La vulnerabilita fondamentale e la stessa in ogni caso: i documenti cartacei e PDF non hanno alcuna verificabilita intrinseca. Una data stampata su un documento non prova nulla su quando il documento e stato effettivamente creato. Una firma non prova se il documento e stato alterato dopo la firma.
