What is a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES)?
A QES is the highest level of electronic signature under European law. In Switzerland it is regulated by ZertES (SR 943.03); in the EU by eIDAS. It carries the same legal weight as a handwritten signature and is accepted by courts and government bodies.
Do I need a European or Swiss passport to use QES?
No. Swisscom's identity verification (Fidentity) accepts passports from any country worldwide. This is not limited to EU/EEA or Swiss citizenship.
Do I need an account to run the eligibility check?
No. The check is free and requires no Swiss Trust Layer account. You only need to create an account after confirming eligibility, if you want to start signing documents.
Do I need to pay anything to use the eligibility checker?
The eligibility check itself is completely free. If your number is not yet enrolled, activating QES is a one-time CHF 25 payment that covers your Swisscom identity verification. Once activated, your enrollment is valid for up to 2 years.
What happens after I pay the CHF 25 activation?
You are redirected straight to Swisscom's secure verification. You receive an SMS code on your number, scan your passport (about 2 minutes), and sign your activation certificate. When you return to our site your number is QES-enrolled for up to 2 years. If the verification cannot start, your payment is refunded automatically.
Why do Swiss numbers need a Swisscom check?
QES signing in Switzerland relies on Swisscom's trust infrastructure under ZertES. Only numbers registered and identity-verified on the Swisscom network can produce a legally valid QES. Prepaid SIMs and numbers on other networks are not currently supported.
My Swiss number is on Salt or Sunrise, can I still use QES?
Not yet for ZertES-compliant QES. Swisscom is the only qualified trust service provider for mobile QES in Switzerland at this time. Enter your email on the 'not eligible' screen and we'll notify you if this changes.
