Why a US copyright registration does not protect you outside the United States

A US copyright registration is a powerful thing inside one legal system and close to inert outside it. This is why it does not cross the border, what national treatment actually carries with it, and what a European rights holder can rely on instead.

The world has no copyright register, except the United States. Why that matters.

Under the Berne Convention, copyright arises automatically on creation in over 180 countries, with no registration required. Almost none of those countries keep a record of it. That gap is invisible until the day somebody disputes who made something first.
