Most conversations about proving you made something focus on the moment right after you made it. A dispute comes up quickly, the file is fresh, the platform you posted it on still exists, and the metadata is intact. The harder version of the problem shows up later: a file you made three, five, or ten years ago, and a dispute that's only surfacing now.
Why old files get harder to prove, not easier
The passage of time doesn't strengthen a claim of authorship. It erodes the evidence around it. A platform you posted to years ago may have shut down, changed its metadata format, or gotten acquired and migrated to new infrastructure that doesn't preserve the original upload timestamps. A file that's been copied between devices, re-exported from old software, or re-uploaded to a new service usually loses its original creation metadata somewhere in that chain, replaced by whatever date the most recent system assigned it.
None of this reflects badly on the file or the person who made it. It's simply what happens to unmanaged digital records over years: the systems around them change faster than the files themselves.
What a sealed record preserves that storage doesn't
A qualified electronic timestamp, issued at the time a file was sealed, doesn't depend on any platform continuing to exist. The certificate produced at sealing time, a hash of the exact file bound to a timestamp from an accredited Qualified Trust Service Provider under ZertES and eIDAS, is independent of wherever the file is stored years later. Whether the original hosting platform still exists, whether the file has been copied a dozen times since, the hash of the original file and the qualified timestamp bound to it don't change.
Under the Berne Convention, your copyright never expired or weakened because time passed. What weakens is your ability to prove the specific facts a dispute needs: when exactly the file existed, and that it hasn't been altered since. A sealed record answers both questions the same way whether it's checked a week later or a decade later.
The habit that actually holds up over time
The practical takeaway isn't to go back and try to reconstruct proof for everything you made in the past, that's usually not possible once the original systems are gone. It's that sealing a file the day you make it is what removes the time-decay problem entirely. The certificate doesn't need refreshing, re-uploading, or re-verifying as years pass. It was designed to answer a question asked later, not just one asked immediately.
